A Decision Review System (DRS) incident during Sunday’s second ODI between India and Sri Lanka has sparked controversy surrounding the three-match ODI series between the two countries.
Sri Lanka emerged victorious by 32 runs, gaining a 1-0 lead following a draw in the opening game. The problem started with a heated DRS conversation between Virat Kohli and others.
>As India chased a goal of 241, Sri Lankan spinner Jeffrey Vandersay’s outstanding performance—taking 6 for 33—was crucial in bowling them out for 208 in 42.2 overs.Vandersay tried hard, but the Sri Lankan team was disappointed with a DRS ruling that took precedence.
Akila Dananjaya beat Kohli’s inside edge with an off-break that swung in sharply in the 15th over of India’s chase. Kohli chose to have his initial lbw decision overturned by the on-field umpire reviewed.
Thanks to UltraEdge technology, TV umpire Joel Wilson reversed the call due to a spike close to bat. When the call was reversed, Kohli grinned, clearly relieved.
The Sri Lankan players were not happy with the decision. Asalanka addressed his displeasure to the on-field umpire, Raveendra Wimalasiri, while Kusal Mendis threw his helmet to the ground in a display of rage.
Sanath Jayasuriya, the coach of Sri Lanka, also descended from the locker room to confer with the reserve umpire over the ruling.
Even with the relief, Kohli’s innings did not last long. After four overs, Kohli was bowled by Vandersay, who used a flipper to trap him in front of the middle stump
. Kohli thought about doing another review, but his partner Axar Patel talked him out of it, which led to Kohli’s dismissal.
While Kohli was making his way to the Sri Lankan team to shake hands after the game, Jayasuriya pulled him aside for a heated but quick conversation. Both men gave each other a friendly shoulder pat as the conversation came to a close.
India must now win the third ODI in Colombo on Wednesday in order to tie the series. It is now a “do or die” situation.
