Graham Thorpe: Tributes from Cricketers Past and Present.

Ben Stokes and Michael Vaughan, two current and former cricket players, conveyed their condolences to former England player and coach Graham Thorpe, who passed away at the age of 55.<

“Thorpey, RIP. I appreciate all of your career-long guidance; you were a fantastic teammate and player.You depart as a legend of England cricket, but you have passed away far too soon.

Ben Stokes, the current captain of the England Test team, shared a photo of himself wearing a shirt with the number “Thorpe564″—the latter’s Test cap number—written on the back along with five red heart emojis.

Thorpe represented England in 100 Test matches from 1993 to 2005, amassing 6,744 runs at an average of 44.66, including 16 hundreds.

In addition to playing domestic cricket for Surrey from 1988 to 2005, he represented England in 82 One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and scored 2,380 runs at an average of 37.18, with 21 half-centuries, according to IANS. 

“Very sad to hear about Graham Thorpe. He was a gritty and fantastic batsman who was always prepared for a battle on the field.

Heartfelt condolences to his friends and family,” wrote former India leg-spinner Anil Kumble on ‘X’. “Such tragic news about Graham Thorpe, played with and against the little legend because the age of 10, great player and human being, young at heart, thoughts with friends and family on x,” wrote previous England spinner Shaun Udal on ‘X’. Duckett, the current England opener, wrote on ‘X’.

Thorpe began his coaching career in Australia with the New South Wales squad, where he worked with players such as David Warner and Steve Smith, before returning to Surrey for two years as their batting coach.

Later on, he joined the England Lions and worked with younger development teams as the national head batting coach for the ECB. The senior England men’s white-ball team, which went on to win the 2019 ODI World Cup in their home nation, hired Thorpe as their batting coach in 2013.

Thorpe served as Chris Silverwood’s assistant coach during the Covid-19 pandemic and even temporarily took over as head coach of England’s Twenty20 international series against Pakistan.

Thrope’s tenure came to an end with England’s 0–4 Ashes defeat. He was announced as Afghanistan’s new head coach in March 2022, however he was unable to take the job due to a serious illness.
